Pavement ants are known for feeding on pet food and moving through plumbing pipes and on electrical wires. Their nests are often found under stones and pavement cracks. Also popular are their sand domes that they create at the entrances of their colony nests.
Carpenter ants love to feast on wood, preferably water-damaged wood, including the wood in your home. For Okanagan homeowners, the presence of these ants should not be ignored, as they could cause significant damage inside your walls.
Odorous house ants do not bite or sting, but they are quite a nuisance for homeowners as they are persistent intruders once they identify your home as a food source. They are easily identified by the spoiled coconut smell that is produced when they are crushed.
Cornfield ants often nest in damp areas, brick walls, pavement cracks and in openings around foundations. Cornfield ants can be fairly large and many people mistake them for carpenter ants. They do not bite or cause structural damage, but they may find their way into your home looking for sweets.
