Spiders

Black Widows, Brown Recluses & Hobo Spiders

Most spiders are venomous, but very few are considered dangerous to humans. However, even spiders without toxic venom are generally not welcome in Okanagan homes. When it comes to dangerous species, such as the black widow, it’s important that you know how to identify them. Black widow female spiders are easily identified by the red hourglass-shaped marking on their backs, but they are not the only dangerous spider. The venom of a brown recluse can also cause bodily harm to humans if left untreated. Brown recluses can be identified by the white and dark brown markings, shaped like a violin, on their abdomen and the row of bristles on their back legs. At Your Pest Defense, we can identify the types of spiders that are in your building and take appropriate actions.

Integrated Pest Management

One of the best methods of controlling spiders in your home is through Integrated Pest Management (IPM) which consists of:
  • Preventative measures: Prevent spider bites by shaking out bedding and clothing before use
  • Exclusion: Deny entry to spiders with tight-fitting screens, door sweeps and weather stripping
  • Sanitation: Store items off the floor, remove trash and eliminate potential prey such as ants and flies
  • Chemicals: Insecticides applied directly to spiders, webs and target sites by pest control professionals
